I know I keep talking about the year of the Water Tiger, but it is bringing powerful change. Can you feel the changes in the energy of your home already?
We can't have a complete yang home or a complete yin home, and when designing a space, I ensure I incorporate aspects of Feng Shui to create harmony and balance.
As I mentioned in my last few posts, there are calmer or "yin" rooms like the bathroom, bedroom and dining room. And then there are rooms that lend towards activity, i.e. 'yang' rooms.
Because this year is strong, you'll probably be using a lot of energy for very interactive rooms.
The kitchen or family rooms are dynamic rooms where a lot of movement and activity happens. As such, we tend to want to use bright, zesty colours such as yellows, orange, bright pink, aqua, lime green or red in the space.
The kitchen is a great place to combine fire and wood tones. But I would be cautious about adding too much red to a kitchen since we already have the stove (fire element) in place. Instead, bring in balance by using wood tones and small splashes of colour.
The Family room is definitely a "yang" space because it's a lively room full of family interaction. There is typically a lot of activity in this space, and it tends to be a gathering place within the home. The soft textures of big, comfy couches can bring balance to the place. We can also ensure that there is a neutral backdrop to balance out added energetic colour.
