GOING BEYOND SPRING CLEANING YOUR HOME: FENG SHUI AND SPACE CLEARING

Cleanse old energy and welcome the new.

It’s that time of year when many people start to think about spring cleaning their home as the weather gets warmer, flowers are budding and the sun shines a little brighter and longer each day.

As a Feng Shui consultant, I encourage my clients to spring clean their home as well as implement a space clearing. Space clearing is the resetting of energy so that positive chi and abundant opportunities can enter a space and therefore your life.

Why is that? Well, did you know that when something happens in your environment, energetic debris is left behind and could either be positive or negative. Our environment is like a sponge and takes on our thoughts and emotions and impresses it on everything around us, for example our furnishings, belongings, the walls. This in turn influences the way we feel.

Think back and ask yourself if you have ever walked into a home, office, garden or any other space and felt a dullness or heaviness about it. Now think of a space that you have encountered that brought on the feeling of joy and vibrancy. We intuitively pick up on the energy of any space we enter and many of us have experienced walking into a room that just makes us feel great. If we condition our space to positive influence, the energy will shift to benefit those of us living and working in the breath of that space. Negativity such as illness, arguments or adversity will have the opposite effect.

Space clearing is not a new notion. Historically, we have practiced it in every culture and society using many different techniques. In modern society, spring cleaning is our way of cleansing old energy and welcoming the new. It is a symbol of new beginnings, the expectation of a better future, and buoys emotional and spiritual change.

Whether we use it in our home or business, space clearing is meant to replenish and invigorate the prosperity within your environment. It is therefore recommended to do space clearing at least once a year, prior to moving into a home, or after events that cause negative energy. Space clearing is simple and enjoyable especially when you create the habit to do it.

Here are a few different cleansing techniques and tips which can be used in a home or office. Improve chi so that you will experience increased prosperity and improved health and relationships in your life.

1. Space Cleansing: Space clearing is essentially carving out time when you are in positive spirits and high energy, starting at the main door of the home. Then using either a Smudging Stick, sandalwood incense, dried sage or any purifying essential oils such as lemongrass, sage or lavender, walk around the house to purify any energy residues. We suggest waving it in each corner, closet, and cabinet to disintegrate the energies. Open the windows after to disperse the negative energy and to allow fresh air into your space.

2. Feng Shui Consultant: Hire a professional Feng Shui consultant to help you address the rebalancing of chi. Sometimes, there are invisible characteristics of a space that need to be corrected along with visible elements. Clients often say that after I have visited a space, there are immediate tangible differences where the space feels lighter and more joyful. Better sleep, health and prosperity and more vibrant energy is experienced as well.

3. Life Energy: Plants are one of the most cost effective ways of turning around energy within a space. Add life energy with real plants, fresh flowers and vibrant fruit for example lemons and oranges for zest.

4. Pets:
Pet lovers will be happy to know that having a pet can raise positive chi. Their constant movement, sound and energy causes stagnant or stuck energy to circulate.

5. Lights: Dark corners and spaces cause stuck energy so strategically adding light is important. Light in your foyer to welcome you home at night and lights the exterior of your house serve to lift chi too.

6. Religious / Spiritual Masters: Based on your religion, you could also request the leaders of your faith to visit your space and analyze or bless the space.

7. Colors: Feng Shui works with five elements and a Feng Shui consultant will often use colour to harmonize elements within the space. A change of color or a fresh coat of paint has a positive impact on how you experience the space.

8. Friends and relatives:
Fun and laughter is a sure sign of positive energy and having friends and family over livens the energy.

9. Music / Positive Noises: The use of sound disrupts stagnant chi. This can be done with a simple but strong clapping of your hands, playing of music instruments, using Tibetan singing bowls or ringing space clearing bells at all corners or the house.

It’s important to take your time and not rush the process and to be mindful that your intention is to purify your home and feel positive energy, envisioning that you are getting rid of anything negative. This allows for a clean slate, renewed positive energy and appreciation for your home.
